Advance Praises for the Book
Colonel Francis has done yeoman service to the army and to the nation by compiling this labour of love that describes important episodes of the Indian Army in wars and in warlike operations, briefly but in sufficient detail to keep the reader fully engrossed. The book is much more than history; it is about the actions of gallant officers and men of the Indian Army; their indomitable spirit; their unmatched bravery; and above all their sacrifices for the nation, which in many cases snatched victory from near hopeless situations.
The book contains details of all important wars and warlike operations fought by the Indian Army after Independence. From the saving of Jammu & Kashmir in 1947-48, when the army was fully engaged in dealing with the violence of the Partition and dividing itself in to two entities, one each for India and Pakistan; to the 1962 War that was an overall debacle, but where our troops fought ferociously in many places and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy; to Pakistan`s getting a bloody nose in 1965, even as the Indian Army was in the midst of a major reorganisation; to the glorious history-making victory in 1971; and finally the Kargil War of 1999 where a highly adverse operational situation was converted to victory on account of the bravery of our young officers and soldiers. The author has also included the Indian Army`s operations in fighting insurgents; its contributions in various parts of the world operating under the aegis of the UN; and the manner in which Pakistan was upstaged in Siachen.
I must also commend him for honouring our two Field Marshals, both outstanding soldiers and leaders.
This book is for both the youth of the nation, nay for all citizens; as well as for rekindling the interest of all who wear military uniforms or have donned them in the past.
Francis, thank you for this gem that was needed, not only for remembering the heroes of the Indian Army but also for enthusing the lives of our youth who may emulate the sacrifices of these gallant men when they find themselves in similar situations. ISBN - 9789382652175
