India is deficient in edible oil and oilseeds. Oilseed brassicas or mainly the rapeseed and mustard in India are the second major source of edible oil after groundnut. The area production and productivity of rapeseed and mustard have increased from 2.07 m.ha 0.76 m.tonnes and 368 kg/ha in 1950-59 to 6.65 m.ha 6.44 m.tonnes and 968 kg/ha respectively in 1998-99 due to various developmental efforts initiated in the country. India now leads the world in acreage under these crops but their productivity is low. More importantly they also suffer serious losses in yield due to various diseases insect and non-insect pests problem of soil salinity and alkalinity and weed infestation etc. This multidisciplinary.book comprising six independent chapters provides an up-to-date complete and comprehensive account of the biotic and abiotic factors that act as major constraints in the growth and productivity of rapeseed and mustard in the Indian subcontinent and of their counterparts (rape and turnip rape) in temperate countries as well besides detailing methods of their management. Each chapter has received full justice in the treatment of the subject matter; all relevant research findings incorporated in a concised form and expressed in a lucid language and supported by exhaustive references. Research areas needing further attention have been duly indicated. The book is essentially useful for postgraduate students teachers agronomists plant pathologists entomologists agricultural chemistry weed scientists plant breeders and all those who are dealing with these crops both in India and abroad.ISBN - 9788123908779
