Lucknow: Buildings, Begums and The British is not about history; rather it is a book on heritage – defined as the legacy of physical artefacts and intangible attributes inherited from past generations. As a city , Lucknow has witnessed many upheavals during the last three centuries; from being the seat of Nawabi pomp and show to the imperiousness of Colonial rule. From being described as the Constantinople of the East to being decimated, demolished and “fairly improved off the face of this earth”. Although some aspects of Lucknow , especially few errant Nawabs and the siege of the Residency during 1857 are well known, the author has tried to focus on lesser-known aspects of the city, embellishing the text with interesting vignettes and tit-bits of information, accompanied by vintage images – in an attempt to present a holistic picture of the city , from its turbulent past, to whatever remains during its present times. The book, Lucknow: Buildings, Begums and The British by Dr PC Sarkar , showcases the heritage of the city in a nutshell, making it easy for those fascinated by the history and architecture of Lucknow . He focuses on some lesser known monuments and aspects of the city , including roles played by some influential women (read Begums) of the time and the British. The illustrations help the reader to understand and appreciate the monuments that the writer so passionately talks about. About The Author:- PC Sarkar holds a Ph.D in organic chemistry and is presently working as a scientist in the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Govt. of India. He completed his schooling from St. Francis` College, Lucknow , followed by college education from Lucknow Christian College and Lucknow University . He imbibed a passion for the Nawabi and Colonial heritage of Lucknow during his childhood. He continued his love for the city, even though the call for a livelihood took him far from his roots, at a relatively young age. In addition to a specialized book on chemistry and several research publications in national and international journals pertaining to his profession, Dr Sarkar has to his credit, more than 50 articles on Lucknow , which appeared in the Heritage Page of The Lucknow Tribune during the years: 2013-14Contents Foreword 11 Preface 13 Introduction 15 THE BUILDINGS 1.
