About the Book: Settlement Pattern Urban Growth and Craft Technology in North India
In the present monograph an attempt has been made to discuss the factors that contributed for an understanding of the development of settlement patterns from rural to urban form in North India. This monograph is the outcome of Dr. Singh`s researches has during the last one decade, which represent papers published in research Journals and other academic volumes.
In addition, the papers have been added with fresh information revealed from the newly excavated sites such as Pakkakot, Imilidih Khurd, Agiabir, Lahuradeva, Tokwa, Jhusi and others. He has also been an active participant in some of the excavations. This monograph is an important research work specially represents for those working in the field of South Asian Archaeology.
About the Author: Santosh Kumar Singh
Dr. Santosh Kumar Singh (b. 1969) is currently engaged in Post-Doctoral Research at Banaras Hindu University. He received his early education in Ballia, and obtained his Masters degree from Poorvanchal University in 1992. He joined research in the Department of AIHC and Archaeology, Banaras Hindu University in 1993 and completed his Ph.D. on the topic of Urbanization in North India (600-1200 A.D.) in 1996.
further, he also obtained two years P.G. Diploma in Archaeology from the same University in 1998. Dr. Singh is a recipient of several awards and fellowships including B.H.U. fellowship for his doctoral degree and Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi, Post-Doctoral Fellowship.
Dr. Singh activiely engaged in several field researches including excavations at Waina, Ballia (1994) , Imlidih Khurd, Gorakhpur (1995), Bhunadih, Ballia (1996), Khairadih, Ballia (1997), Chaukhandi, Varanasi (1998), Dholavira, Kutch, Gujrat (1999), Agiabir, Mirzapur (1999 to 2001), Anai, Varanasi (2005), Alamgirpur, Meerut (2008), Bulandkhera, Gautam Buddha Nagar (2008) and Pakkakot, Ballia (2011 to 2012). Further, he was also associated with the explorations of Chandauli, Sonbhadra-Sidhi and Western Uttar Pradesh from time to time.
Dr. Singh has published papers widely in National and International journals of repute and attended a number of National and International Conferences and Seminars. Amongst his publications "Uttar Bharat Mein Nagaron Ka Vikas (600-1200 A.D.)`` (2004), Excavations at Khairadih (1996-97) (2003-04), "Urbanization of the Middle Ganga Plain: An Archaeological Perspective" (2010), "Ancient Ballia: An Archaeological Perspective" (in press) and more than three dozen research articles.
