These two volumes of the book "Eminent Women in the Mahabharata" by Dr. Mrs. Vanamala Bhawalkar are the continuation of her previous work "Women in the Mahabharata" presenting a complete pictuere of woman as depicted in the Mahabharata. Dealing with her status,education family life as daughter,wife and mokther,social and political life,field of her activities and achievements,moral code,house ,dress,ornaments,food etc.. And also the life of woman of lower class. The present two volumes offer a complete study of eighteen eminent women as depicted in the Mahabharata. The noble and dignified personality of Draupadi,Kunti`s,virtues,patience and suffering,Gandhari`s wisdom and adherence to moral code, Damayanti`s superb qualities,and virtues of other characters like Subhadra,Satyavati,Devayani,Sarmistha,Sukanya etc. will remain as a source of inspiration to generations to come. Dr. Mrs Bhawalkar has made immence contribution to the Mahabharata studies. No thorough study in this field was available when her book Mahabharat mein nari was published in 1964. Till now ;this Magnus opus in English by Dr. Bhawalkar remains perhaps the only detailed presentation of the women as found in this Great Epic. These three books can be referenc books for scholars and students of Ancient Indian Culture, and will also be interesting to ordinary readers. About Author : Daughter of Justice N.S. Lokur of Bombay High Court and born in 1914 at Belgaum (Karnataka) Dr. Vanamala Bhawalkar graduated from the University of Bombay with Honours in Sanskrit. She passed M.A. in Ancient Indian History and Culture securing two gold medals from Calcutta University and M.A. in Sanskrit with first class from Nagpur University. She is married to Prof. D.R. Bhawalkar an eminent Scientist of International reputation. She secured Ph. D. in Sanskrit and retired as Reader Sanskrit Department,University of Saugor. She has made important contribution to Indological studies through her books. Mahabharat mein nari (1964) and Woman in the Mahabhrata (1999) as well as her remarkable study of Eighteen Eminent Women in the Mahabharata. Mrs. Bhawalkar has won a number of literacy awards. Her play SANSARACHA SARIPAAT, as the best Marathi drama after independence was honoured with first prize in 1954. Her two Sangitikas(opleras) in Sanskrit RAMVANGAMNAM and PRAVATIPARMESHAVARIYAM in various metres and set to classical music,have been staged in her direction at Sagar,Bhopal,Ujjain and Indore. UDHAR KA PATI a popular Hindi play by her has been telecast, PADHDAND a one act play in Sanskrit,broadcast by Air, PANCHMAHAKAVEYASHU CHANDER a monography (have been awarded). Two bellets-SITAHARANAM and SHAKUNTALA besides a number of poems and research articles a Children Drama AANDEVATA and SHRI SATYASAISADACHARSAHINTA,SHRI SATYASAIRAMRAKSHA and SHRI SATYASAI STORATMALA are her other publications. Dr. Vanamala Bhawalkar has been honoured with the prestigious Tirumalamba Award by Shaswati Trust of Bangalore as the best living woman author in Sanskrit.
