Book Summary of Madhya Pradesh : Cultural And Historical Geography From Place Names In Inscriptions In 2 Vols.
The present work aims in tracing the Cultural and Historical Geography of Madhya Pradesh from available place names from the inscription found in the region which have been classified in this book on the basis of prefixes and suffixes and are arranged under different heads such as Topography, Flora, Fauna, Settlement, Administrative divisions, Social, Economic and Religious conditions chronologically. The place names which have been taken here are dynasty-wise and for the convenince of the readers they have been classified under different groups such as (1) Mauryas, Sungas and Satavahanas, (2) Guptas and their feudatories and contemporaries, (3) Pratiharas and Paramaras, (4) Chandellas and their contemporaries and (5) Kalachuris of Tripuri. Some epigraphs mentioning the place names of Madhya Pradesh but found in adjoining provinces as well have also been discussed. The maps of the kingdom of Paramaras adn Chandellas of Jejakabhukti give an idea abou tthe extent of the empire of these dynasties.
About Author :
Dr. Malati Mahajan who retired as a lecturer from the Post Graduate Teaching, Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology,Nagpur University is the student of the same department. She passed her M.A. examination in the first division and was awarded Motilal Nehru Centenary Prize for standing frist in order of merit. She was recipient of U.G.C. scholarship while working for her Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. S.B. Deo. After obtaning Ph.D. She worked as research assistant with Dr. Deo and completed the work of translation of the topographical list of inscriptions of Maharashtra and Goa in Marathi. In the same capacity she worked with Dr. Ajay Mitra Shastri and completed the project titled Dictionary of palce names from inscriptions from Maharashtra and Goa.
