Book Summary of Justice, Democracy and State in India: Reflections on Structure, Dynamics and Ambivalence
This book is a critical analysis of the complex and dynamic relationship between the liberal conception of justice, democracy and the state in postcolonial India. It examines whether these have been successful in their desired aims of eliminating inequalities, creating an egalitarian society and accomplishing other goals affirmed in the Indian Constitution.
The book dwells at length on the governing ideology of the Supreme Court of India in dispensing justice, its role in shaping and promoting social justice and the state`s ability to widen democratic participation and inclusive citizenship. As such, the author focuses on India`s socio-economic and cultural reality in the postcolonial context and critically examines constitutional history and discourse, political rhetoric and the contrasting ground reality, elaborated through notions of class, electoral politics, civil society and the ideology of the freedom struggle.
