The ˜Thinking Ethics` seminar was launched in Geneva in February 2005 precisely to start this process, by increasing public awareness of the issue and seeding the debate. Specialists in various fields came together for workshops on five subjects: ˜ethics and consciousness`, ˜ethics and knowledge`, ˜ethics and performance`, ˜ethics and disobedience`, and ˜ethics in real time`. Their discussions attempted to identify future scenarios and possible trends, and to establish what will change, what might drive the changes and where the problem areas might arise in the next ten years.
Their conclusions were far-reaching, sometimes contradictory, occasionally startling. But broad areas of agreement emerged. There will definitely be more integration - across the different facets of people`s lives, across science and the humanities, and across performance measurements in the private and public sectors. And ethics will be a major factor in decision-making, as transparency will increase and information is instantly available through real-time technologies.
It is clear that trust, reputation management, individual integrity, ethics training and dealing with diversity will be important issues in the coming years. And we need to be ready for a proliferation of standards, rankings and some form of policing, as well as acceptance of disobedience as an agent of social change. ISBN 9781861979414
