For a region marred by decades of violence, its literature is not just a social and historical map of events, but also a medium of telling its story to the world. In the yarn of such a region, one often finds anger, fear, and pain but also endurance, restraint, and hope intricately woven. The poetry and prose of North-East India are no different.
This two-volume anthology celebrates the richness and diversity of culture as evinced in writings from the seven states of North-East India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. Representing around 70 writers and almost 60 years of literary output, this collection includes nearly 150 selections from poetry, short fiction, and essays.
Divided into two sections, this volume includes poetry and essays by leading writers from the region. In poetry, we have works by Navakanta Barua, Nilmani Phookan, Shaktipada Brahmachari, Rajkumar Bhubonsana, and Rong Bong Terang, among others, who initiated new trends in the genre. The essays, including those by Mrinal Miri, Esther Syiem, Moushumi Kandali, and Easterine Iralu, range from the philosophical to the analytical and the descriptive. Poetry and prose meld to reflect on and discuss the multi-ethnic and multilingual cultures of the region.
