In the present conjuncture of globalization, a key subject of debate has been the prospect of `post-nation` and the waning appeal of patriotism at the horizon of transnationalism. Diaspora studies, as articulated in this ethnographically rich and discursively sharp intervention, make a valuable contribution to this debate. The anthropological examination of the Indian Diaspora in different locations of the world in this book shows the nation and the trans-nation to be not static but dynamic, moving targets. Their positionalities are determined by the geopolitical and ethno-cultural location of the analyst — in this case India — and the analytical frame of comparison brought to bear on them. The rootedness of this study in India provides coherence in the nature of a case-study of globalization from a prominent Diaspora node of our times. At the same time, it unravels dimensions of Indian social institutions viewed from the vantage point of Diaspora. The book, therefore, is an invitation to further multidisciplinary and multi-sited collaboration in the exploration of globalization, Diaspora, nationalism, and patriotism, as well as transnationalism from diverse perspectives.
