The book is an outcome of interdisciplinary National project ‘Growth and Development of Children: A Bio-cultural Perspective’ launched by the Anthropological Survey of India under 9th Five Year Plan. The India project was initiated the aim to study the variation in physical growth and development of children aged between 6-10 years of different communities of India. A child’s growth rate is single best indicator of not only his/her state of health and nutrition but also psychological and socio-economic environment. Due to diversified dietary pattern in India there seems to be differences in the growth of children under different socio-economic strata. Children from well-to- do population have shown better growth than those from low income groups. Malnutrition among the children has recognized as a major pubic health problem in developing countries particularly in India. In the first phase of the project, Eleven communities namely Ahir of Haryana, Yadav of Uttar Pradesh, Ghase Mali of Maharashtra, Mala of Andhra Pradesh, Poundrakshtriya of west Bengal, Bauri of west Bengal, Oraon of west Bengal, Kaibarta o Assam, Lushai of Mizoram, Nicobarese of Car Nicobar Islands and Dangi of Rajasthan have been studied during the year 1999-2000 and reported here. The book details growth pattern vis-à-vis nine anthropometric variables such as weight, stature, sitting height, Bi-acromial breadth, Bi-iliac breadth, Mid-upper arm circumference and skin fold at triceps, biceps and sub-scapula. The book also highlights the extent of malnutrition among children through the use of nutritional anthropometry, the frequency of various common nutrition deficiency signs, the growth pattern among children in terms of their socio-economic background such as per capita income, occupation of parents of parent’s education, family type, family size and parity of the child and the hygienic environment in the study and its impact the reoccurrence of infection disease. This book will be of great use to social scientists, medical practitioners, health problems of children in the developing countries besides Anthropologists.
