This book deals with the dynamics of bovine economy of India with a special focus on Tamil Nadu. Factors like agro-climatic conditions performance of agriculture, mechanization, irrigation, cropping pattern, ownership and distribution of land have significant influence on the size, composition and productivity of bovines across regions in India. The observed trends in work and milch animal population and trends in milk production, demand and consumption indicate that dairying has been gaining importance in the bovine economy of Tamil Nadu. The changes in size, composition and distribution of bovines are found to be broadly in response to the decline in animal requirements and the development of dairying. The study, which examined the bovine sector in a historical perspective, highlights the constraints that need to be resolved to sustain the growth development of bovine sector, especially dairying and milk production. The issues examined and findings have relevance in other parts of the country. The book should be of interest to readers, researchers and policy makers in Economics, Anthropology, Economic History, agriculture & Animal Husbandry, Rural Development and Regional & Sectoral Issues.
