International Payments is the key aspect of any Nation`s economic transactions. The developing countries are facing grim situation in this area. The situation was very alarming in the 1980`s as most of the countries experienced huge trade deficits which, in the process, lead to adverse balance of payments. This result in the depletion of foreign exchange reserves significantly. To meet this, the governments had no alternative but to go for loans from IMF, World Bank and other agencies. Pressure on the balance of payments may become acute when the foreign debt has to be redeemed. The developing countries in general and India in particular encountered these problems in varying degrees. The gravity spurred enormous research activity in search of the reasons and found solutions to the problem and the present work also aimed in that direction. An attempt has been made in this volume to find out various facets and nuances of the subject during the pre-reforms period.
