Competition has intensified dramatically in the world economy following globalization and the establishment of the WTO. Understanding the nature of competition has become a prerequisite for policy planners if emerging economies like India are to survive. This volume deals with the measurement and assessment of competition in the Indian manufacturing industries.

The book evaluates competition as a process using multi-dimensional indicators from structure, conduct, and performance paradigms. The dynamics of competition is assessed in the background of the mobility of firms, share-cutting, and the persistence of profits in the Indian manufacturing sector. The outcome is evaluated in terms of international trade performance. More specifically, the proposition, that to win abroad one has to be domestically competitive, is tested by regressing multiple measures of competition on trade outcomes. Covering five hundred companies classified into fourteen industries, the study fills an important gap in the literature, both methodologically and in substantive terms.
