A very lively account of the fortunes, both waxing and waning, of the city of Delhi under the Islamic invaders and dynasties. Written in the form of a narrative story it traces the inception of the city and its progress under various dynasties. Starting with a short mythological sketch of the city, it starts its historical story from the invasion of Mahmud of Ghaznavi from AD 1000 to AD 1030, and proceeds on to the establishment of the Muslim rule in the years 1191-1206; then come the slave kings (1206-1287) and steadily it moves to the Khilji’s - from 1290 to 1321; the Tughlak kings (1321-1388), the Lodis; and then to the establishment to the Mugal Dynasty by Babar; each mugal king is discussed separately; Shivaji is also noticed, as is the rise of the Sikhs and the decay of the Mugals. This book, meant for the general reader, or for anyone traveling to India, was first published in the years 1912.
