Tibet had traditionally been a theocratic state. Buddhism had been the state religion, which received a setback with the Communist intervention. Tibetans are intensely religious-minded, and in the face of the Chinese domination religion provided them with the inspiration to bear the brunt of communism and fight for their lost freedom. This book offers a collection of magnificent photographs depicting Tibet—its breathtaking landscape, the grandeur and sanctity of its monasteries, and the lives of the people engaged in different economic activities—interwoven with lucidly written short explanatory texts on Buddhist ideals and the Tibetans treading on the path of Buddhism. The book consists of two sections. The first consists of the teachings of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama which reflects on the happiness of the human mind and the spiritual uplift of mankind. The second elaborates on the way of life in Tibet, throwing light on economic and social aspects, particularly the part played by religion. This aesthetically and stylistically designed book with its crisp and informatory text will enthrall the reader and enable him to emerge with an enriched appreciation and understanding of this fascinating land, which is also known as the ‘Roof of the World’.

Born in north-east Tibet in 1935, the Dalai Lama was recognised at the age of two as the reincarnation of the thirteenth Dalai Lama. He was brought to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and enthroned in 1940. Ten years later, he assumed full responsibility as Head of State and Government. After the suppression of the Tibetan national uprising in 1959, His Holiness escaped to India where he was given political asylum. An apostle of peace, he has received many honours, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. He is the author of two memoirs and many books on Buddhism.
Eiichi Matsumoto was born in Kanagawa, Japan. He had a fascination for India and Tibet, and from 1970 onwards, stayed in Bodhgaya (India). In 1971, he met H. H. Dalai Lama, who was then 36 years old, for the first time. He developed great reverence for the Dalai Lama, and even accompanied him on his visit to Japan in 1983 for three weeks. In 1989, Matsumoto compiled the photos he had taken in a book titled Dalai Lama to commemorate the occasion of Dalai Lama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. He continues taking photographs focusing on the cultural heritage of Asia—particularly India, Tibet and Cambodia.
