Indian cities are surrounded by traditional villages with their own unique residential and behavioural patterns. The evolution of residential areas in the emerging suburbs of Indian cities presents a fascinating scenario. The objectives of this study are to understand the growth and development of suburbs and the setting is suburban in eight maujas of the suburbs of the western part of Ahmedabad city. Various aspects of suburban landuse, demographic composition and behaviour, and distribution of infrastructural facilities responsible for the growth of the suburbs have been studied. A Socio-Demographic mode has been evolved to classify the residential pattern of the study are. The model measures the level of Modernity of the Suburban residents in their socio economic status, behaviour and life style and housing characteristics. The study has brought out that behaviour and life style do not change as fast as socio-economic status, or housing characteristics of residents. In order to avoid the conversion of core villages of suburban slums, the study has made important suggestions and recommendation.
