This book is a study of the agrarian economy of Punjab in India`s colonial period. The author examines the economic aspectof the lives of Punjab`s peasants as a starting point for understanding peasant politics in the period between the 1920s and 1947. A comparision is also made between Punjab and other regions of colonial India, especially Estern India. Focusing on teh peasants of Punjab as tax payers, the author moves on to disscuss the Punjabi peasants as debtor, to analyse the market conditions, agrarian relations and capital accumulation and investment in the period. Eventually, the author suggest in the concluding chapter comparing Punjab and Eastern India that instead of the two regions being `polar opposites`, as commonly suggested, they were in fact heading int eh same direction of change.
