The message of Guru Nanak and some of his successors has been preserved in the Guru Granth Sahib. The fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev, who compiled the Granth in 1604 A.D. had in mind to make the Granth a universal scripture, not just for only those who were of Guru Nanak`s persuasion. Guru Arjan Dev compiled not only the saying and teachings of the Sikh Gurus but also of Pirs and Saints, who had strutted across the stage of spirituality with distinction during the 12th to 17th centuries, when the interaction between Islam and Hinduism was internse. Thus, the Guru Granth Sahib presents before us a parliament of preceptors and saints who belonged to various classes and strata o preceptors and saints who belonged to various classes and strata of society. There are muslim Sufi`s (notably Baba Farid, Bhikhan, Bhai Mardana), Hindu outcastes, brahmins and, for a variety, even a Hindu king (Saint Pipa), also. A Granth containing hymns of Sikh Gurus and of Hindu and Muslim saints was a puzzle to the people of orthodox views. Such a kind of scripture was not known to anyone and was unthinkable. In this book attempt has been made to highlight some of the experience of the God-intoxicated mystics and the lessons they teach us... Highly inspiring and elevating sketches of the great saints.
