The XML family of technologies, by its very nature, is fluid and flexible. It provides developers with an array of choices for integrating XML into their IT solutions. However, as with any new technology, one needs to watch out for potential "traps" when working with XML. Many developers end up with solutions with poor performance and highly unmaintainable code, along with high costs. What we need to understand here is that the problems arise not because of lack of information (there are many books and online resources on XML out there), but rather, the lack of quality advice on using all the features that the XML family offers. This is where the XML Design Handbook comes into the picture. This book offers "best practice" advice to developers when they approach key design elements, such as schema design, parsing strategies, and presentation strategies. Rather than focussing on specific algorithms (although some have been presented), it takes a holistic approach towards the design of XMLenabled applications.Who is this book for? This book is for the beginningtointermediate XML developer or architect who has experience designing applications for other platforms. The reader is assumed to be familiar with the base technologies (XML, XSLT, etc.), but not very experienced in their implementation in commercial projects. Experience in working with relational data would be an added bonus.
