Recent developments in India have been marked by the rise of BJP to the centre stage and the formation of a coalition government at the centre with BJP as the dominant partner. How enduring this phenomenon would be is what this study is all about. It traces the growth of Hindu nationalism from the late nineteenth century to the present and attmpts to assess the fuure of political Hinduism in general and BJP in particular. It enquires into fundamental questions such as, limits of the use of religion in Indian politics: are the other parties any diferent from BJP in so far as comunal mobilization is concerned; does Hindutava mean political Hinduism or Hinduization of India politics; can there be anything like ` genuine secularism`; and are Muslims in India really pamered. The study also attempts to view the party and its ideology from a holistic perspective. ISBN: 81-7304-253-5
