In this book, the author has used various sources like archival records including English and Portuguese documents, indigenous recordcs such as kadatas and Tulu folklore including paddanas. This research work proves that the people of South Kanara showed keen interest in craft production, apart from agricultural production. Aspects such as fluctuations in trade due to emergence of political and social changes, contribution of traders to the society, items of trade, relationsjhip between agricultural producation and trade, and impact of European traders on the regional economy are delineated.
