` AKKAMMA DEVI was born 5 September 198 in a small village tucked away in the hills of the Nilgiris. She was educated at St. Joseph`s Convent, Coonoor, which was five miles away. She had to brave the cold and wet. Weather and walk to school, while her younger sister rode on her father`s shoulder. Coming out with flying colours in both her junior Cambridge and Anglo-Indian high School Examination, she went on to do her B.A, in Economics at St. Teresa`s College, Ernakulam. Here she took an active part in the quit India movement of 1942 when she was arrested and detained. Her humble beginnings notwithstanding she won the 1962 General Election with a thumping majority and became the first lady Member of parliament from community and the Nilgiris Constituency. She was awarded the Life-time Achievement Award in January 2003 for fifty years of social work in rural areas with exemplary results.ISBN - 9788188661060
