R.L Stevenson ? was born in Edinburgh on the 13th November 1850. His father, Thomas Stevenson, came from a family of famous lighthouse engineers. Following in the family footsteps, on leaving school, the young Robert Louis began to study engineering at Edinburgh University. Yet poor health, and the fact that he was not really interested, caused him to give up his engineering studies shortly afterwards ? to the disappointment of his father.
However, young Stevenson was interested in writing. During his university days, he had begun to contribute articles to various journals. Though he next began to study law, keeping writing as a spare time hobby, he soon gave that up as well, and took to full-time writing in the end. His poor health, on account of which he travelled quite a bit to warmer climates, gave him a lot of background for his stories. On a visit to California, he married an American lady, whom he had met earlier I France.
