Anna Karenina is considered to be one of the best works of the Russian author, Leo Tolstoy. Anna, the wife of a high ranking bureaucrat in St. Petersburg, witnesses an attempt at reconciliation between her brother Stiva Oblonsky and his wife Dolly at the start of the book. Dolly discovers that Stiva is having an affair with their children’s governess and decides to leave him. Anna manages to convince Dolly to stay on. Meanwhile, Dolly’s sister is being courted by two men - Konstantin Levin, a landowner and Alexei Vronsky, a cavalry officer. Kitty favors the dashing Vronsky. As luck would have it, Vronsky falls for the beautiful Anna. Anna returns home, but Vronsky pursues her. Their hidden romance turns into a passionate affair that is soon discovered by Anna’s husband, Karenin. He initially refuses Anna’s request for a divorce. She is spurned by the high society for her infidelity, and has to remain confined to her house, while Vronsky is free to pursue an active social life. Her social isolation and Vronsky’s neglect force Anna to desperation. Apart from the main characters, there are many supporting characters and a parallel subplot. The characters vividly portray the various facets of Russian society during the time the story takes place.ISBN - 9780553213461
