Realizing the crucial role of the banks, Govt. of India nationalized fourteen major commercial banks in July 1969, and later on six more in April 1980. They act as a catalyst in the all round development of the country mobilizing the necessary resources to enhance the productivity of economy. Prof. Dr. R. Gadgil`s recommendations in adoption of an area approach led to the formulation of the Lead Bank Scheme.
