Anne Katharine Elwood, the author of this book, first recorded its contents in the form of a journal, that she maintained during her journey to, and residence in, India. The first volume describes her journey to India, via the continent of Europe. As with travel narratives of this period, there is a meticulous record of the climate, the landscape, the cities and towns, the architecture, the local life, popular local history, and personal impressions of the countries that she passed through. Travelling over land as sea, she arrived in India, after a journey that took her over 10 months, in 1825, and took up residence in Bombay. Indian life, and its various facets are very interestingly described in this book. The bazaars, the food, the local inhabitants, the history, culture, holds her in fascination, and all these impressions find their way into her journal. She embarked on short tours whilst in India, going to Gujarat and to Rajasthan. This book is in the form of 77 letters, compiled from her journal, which she wrote to her sister. The book ends with a quaint appendix that gives the wages she paid to various people on her way to India, the postal rates of various countries, currency exchange and conversion, and hints for travellers.
