From ancient India to advance India, there are so many changes occurred in education systems. Earlier, the students were taught by Gurukul system where student goes to teachers residence to acquire the knowledge. Due to advent of technology now the students like to studty of his own and besides the school curriculum. In addition to curriculum, there is need to take part in other activities to develop inbuilt skills. In addition to it, the knowledge received by the learner has to go back to the society for the development of it. So the need of extension education arrived in which the learner applies classroom knowledge in the community for its benefit with the simultaneous learning of socio-cultural realities through a participatory approach. This approach has been promoted by University of Mumbai with its annual extension work activities. These activities included vocational and career oriented projects to be conducted at college & community by various college and field oriented activities including street play, raflies, exhibition, poster making, seminar, elocution and essay competition, discussion, debate etc with focus on creating awareness about various social issues such as: child labour, corruption, dowry deaths, HIV/AIDS, juvenile delinquency, eye teasing, pollution, global warming etc. It was found that the students participating in these activities are very delighted and interested to work for the community for its benefit. The author of this book tried to find out the factors responsbile for the increase in the enrollment in these extension work activities day by day. This book aims to provide the necessary empirical evidence that the extension activities are very popular among the undergraduate and post graduate students of University of Mumbai. This book is expected to provide feedback to the teachers and students about the extent of effectiveness of extension work activities. The book has projected the need and benefit of extension activities to the society. The objective of the author is to develop eagerness for the effective use of extension activities for the betterment of the society. He hopes to generate further interest among the teachers and the students to propagate these activities in all the other colleges where these activities are not yet conducted.
