The present work is a critical and comprehensive survey of the land revenue administratio in the Birbhum District of Bengal in the early phase of British `colonial` rule. Since the Esat India Company`s accession to the Diwani of Bengal in 1765, the Company`s main aim was to collect as much land as possible from the province. But the alien rulers had no experience of their own . In oreder to achieve the purpose a series of experiments were made by the early colonozers in the revenue administration of the province of Bengal. In effect, various changes took place in the region. In this wider general background, the author has made an in-depth study of the growthfo the British administrative set-up linked to the land revenue system of Birbhum, a Bengal district. The repercussion on agrarian society owing to varios cjahnges in the field have also been adequately examined.Besides, the different forms of land holding and the zamindari administration have been described in detail . This adequately and exclusive study of the subject proper has not come out before.
About Author :
Studied at Visva-Bharti and took both his B.A. (hons) and M.A. Degrees in History from the University. In January 1980 he had joined the Department of History, Visva-Bharti as UGC Junior research Fellow. Since then he has been engaged in the research. In 1990 the Ph.D. degree was awarded to him by the Visva-Bharti.
Dr. Santra has also been engaged in teaching since 1982. At Present he is a senior Lecturer in History, Birbhum Mahavidayalya, Suri and a Part-time Lecturer, Department of History, Visva-Bharti.
He had contributed an article to the Proceedings of the Indian History Congress, 41st Session (Bombay). Another paper has been contributed to the forthcoming volume, Peasants in Indian History (Essays in memory of Professor R.K. Choudhary) . He had also presented papers in seminars organised by the Institute of Historical Studies, Calcutta. Dr. Santra`s next work, Bankim Chander Itihas Chinta in Bengali is in the press.
