The work chiefly comprises the accounts of two journeys taken up through parts of China and Tibet, by Leut. John Weston Brooke (1880-1908). During these expeditions between 1906 and 1908, he traveled from Sanghai though China to Tibet, in particular western Sachuan and eastern Tibet. The present work grew out from the Lieutenant`s diary, observations of his companion Mr. Meares and the author of the country and the people, never visited by the white people before. The work primarily describes Lieutenant`s adventures, varied and breath-taking as they are, it does, nevertheless, present accurate and lively descriptions of the places visited by the travelers on their way. It presents enough details of the flora and fauna of the country, its geography and topography. The travelers had observed the way of life and religion of the people around and their racial and tribal peculiarities. The work is, therefore, is a record of anthropological interest. The religion of China and Tibet, in particular, the religious practices of the Lamas have been taken notice of. The book may serve as source material for the study of the economic and social conditions of the people of those two countries, during the first quarter of this century. Since the conditions, both political and socio-economic have since been changed a lot, the work has a historical and research values.
