The United Nations Development Programmer`s Human Development Report of 1995 focused on gender disparities in development for 130 countries and constructed gender-reacted Development Index (GDI) to highlight various aspect of discrimination. Publication of this report has stimulated interest in the issues related to the status of women and gender disparities. Many researches have recently tried to quantify gender disparities to depict multifarious discrimination against women, particularly in developing countries. In India, too, where gender relations are influences by traditional hierarchies based on patriarchy, caste and ethnicity and compounded by inequalities of wealth and power, many researches have been carried out in recent past focusing upon the issues related to the status of women and gender discrimination. These studies are largely concerned with national or inter-state situation and ignore the significant regional variations that exist in the socio-economic set-up and women`s status and problems. Hence, the need for regional studies lighting inequalities and neglect faced by female through various tradition of status-educational, health, income, participation in economic and political spheres. The present study focusing upon the populous and backward state of U. P. is an attempt in this direction. The book contain 10 chapters-introduction, scope and methodology. review of literature, socio-economic status of women`s in Uttar Pradesh, Inter-state difference in women`s status and change therein overtime, Composite index of women development has, Gender disparity at the district level, Composite indices of human development of women and gender equality index, Review of women development programmers undertaken under various Five Year Plans and Finally summery of Main Findings, conclusion and suggestions.
