In this extensive book-length study of Stephen Spender s poetry, the author illustrates the breadth length and of Spender s acute social consciousness of the Inter-War period and all that came thereafter. Spender, the last of the great British poets of the Thirties earned a reputation as a radical poet of social and political concern, addressing the politically conscience-stricken Left of his time. With an unmistakable leaning towards Karl Marx s philosophy, Spender s poetry is modified by Freud s psychology of the unconscious as well. The author s innovative approach to Spender s poetry observed in it a new sense of the contemporary situation in England arising out of the social consciousness, radiant with thought and feeling pertaining to social generosity and human sympathy. Further, the study also focuses on the poet s unique conflict between his inner world and the world outside which constitutes the very essence of Spender s modernism.
By treating in-depth the variations of subject and style that abound in Spender s poetic oeuvre, the book presents a systematic and insightful discussion of Spender s poetry including The Still Centre and Collected Poems that earned him both popular praise and the Queen s Gold Medal for poetry. Spender strongly survives as a major poetic voice in the history of 20th century British literature as there is no test of literary merit except survival.
