This textbook has been prepared for the students of the BA Part II English Literature course of Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University. The texts in this book have been selected by the university’s Board of Editors. The anthology is divided into two sections—prose and plays.
The first section consists of the following six prose pieces:
‘Mr Know-All’, a short story by Somerset Maugham
‘Playing the English Gentleman’, an extract from M. K. Gandhi’s autobiography
‘The Function of Education’, a short talk given by Jiddu Krishnamurti
‘Principles of Good Writing’, by noted ELT writer L. A. Hill
‘Letter to my Daughter’, a letter from Jawaharlal Nehru to his daughter Indira
‘What is Courage?’, an essay by a much-decorated British general William Slim
The plays section begins with a short introduction to the genre of the one-act play, and contains four different kinds of plays:
A Marriage Proposal, a farce by Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov
The Monkey’s Paw, based on a famous horror short story by W. W. Jacobs
Villa for Sale, a witty comedy by French film-maker Sacha Guitry
