This book is about the currently retired subalterns of the Indian Army. The ex servicemen as a separate social category have now gained impressive voice in all political forums. Their problems of re settlement area being widely recognised and appreciated by all segments of our society. A brief panoramic assessment of the problems of old and released soldiers have been made since ancient times which has been linked to contribute to the understanding of current problems of ex serviceman. The work has all India focus and its findings are of global importance. Analytically, re settlement has been conceived as a major sociological process in developing societies applicable to all those who are prematurely out of employment. The focus, therefore, is not limited only to the Indian ex servicemen. It includes several other social categories in developing society who are also "governed by the conditions of re-settlement". The study has allowed a number of generalisations in terms of finding meaningful casual relations and also in terms of specifying general conditions in which re-settlement appears as a major social process in developing societies. The terms `re-settlement` has been sociologically categorised and distinguished from the related from the related terms called settlement and `rehabilitation`. A typology of re-settlement has been offered towards the end of the discussion. The typology is relevant for the sociological understanding of the problem which may also provide a perspective for HRM and manpower planning at macro level. ISBN:8170223563
