This book is based on a longitudinal study conducted in four small tribal villages in south India between February 1985 and February 1986. The study investigates the socio economic aspects of malnutrition and ill health, while documenting the complex dynamics of food and health care provisioning in these communities. A central hypothesis that structured the work was that economic inequality within the population was insufficient for inter household income differences to be related to child nutritional well being. Rather, child nutrition status was posited as being particularly associated with seasonal peaks in maternal labour participation and child disease incidence. The results highlight some important conditions for improving the nutrition and health of poor rural Indian population groups, with implications for policy that go beyond the traditional confines of nutrition and health professionals.
