For the first time an analytical study of techinque, style, background, etymology and evolution of dance forms of the Panjab and neighbouring regions has been made and various elements of these forms have been documented and presented in a book form. A number of sketches of dance poses have been included as illustrations to present a clearer view of differented actions and movements of the performers. Some of the more important dance presentations have been suitably illustrated by colour photographs enhancing their appeal and content value. The book includes extermely valuable reference material on folk dance form of Panjab, including western Panjab (Pakistan). Besides, descriptions of folk dances of neighbourning states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir have also been incorporated in the subject matter. On the whole, the book presents a highly impressive range of information on the folk dancing activity of whole of the northern region of the Indian sub-continent and stands out as milestone in the field of folklore studies. Iqbal Singh Dhillon is a well-known poet and scholar. He has been awarded Ph. D. degree by the Punjab University for his research work on folk dances of Panjab. A creative writer and scholar, he has co-authored "The Dances of the North" published by North-Zone Culture Centre, Patiala.
