Promoting competitiveness is one of the objectives of a country`s trade strategy. In this context, specialisation in exports has to be on the basis of comparative advantage considerations. Much of the research in this area has focused on trade in industrial goods. The study of comparative advantage in agricultural exports has received scant atention. Morevoer, work in this area has been done in the context of developed countries whose primary exports form a low proportion of their total exports. However, the weightage of promary products in the export basket of developing economies of South Asia is quite high, necessitating analysis of comparative advantage in agricultural exports. the present work is nitended to fill the vacuum in this area of research. The study is based on the fundamental premise that India being a low income agricultural economy enjoys comparative advantage in agricultural products and labour intensive manufactures. An increase in the share of agriculatural exports in total edports would lead to better performance of her exprenal sector. ISBN: 81-7708-003-2
