The following study is based exclusively in contemporary inscriptions and literature. The evidence of tradition is ignored more or less completely as it leads to confusion and fruitless controversy. This is a concise and very important informative book on the Vijayanagara city and empire. It is divided into two parts. Part one starts with the origin of the city wherein are given 2 chapters on: the Hoysala theory and the founders of the city. Part II of the book is about the origin empire, there are 5 chapters that notice: Ballala III and the sons of Sangama; the early history of the Sangama family; the Kakatiyas and the founders of Vijayanagara; the early Vijayanagara Kings and the Telugu country; and the expansion of the kingdom. There are 5 appendices, among which there are notes on: Doravadi, Kanya Nayaka, Vidyanagara etc. There are two maps in this book, which is a reprint of the 1933 edition.
