In the first of the trilogy on Tibet Charles Bell describes the history of Tibet and its relations with different countries. It also gives highly informative notes on its geography and trade, the early history, the rule of the Dalai Lamas, the British military expeditions, notes on Bhutan, its treaties with Bhutan, the flight of the Dalai Lama to India in 1910, the mission of Bell to Lhasa, Britain’s policy on Tibet and the relations of Tibet with China, Japan and Russia, Mongolia and Nepal. At the end of the book in appendixes are added which give the details of the various treaties that Tibet has concluded in the eighth century and then from the 18th century upto the early 20th century.
