The chief object we have in view in giving this volume to the world, and the chief object of the author in writing it, is to impress upon those who may be called upon to take any part in the administration of India. But there is a higher element and a more important lesson in this record of a life spent in the service of India. The author gave to the people of India not only his head, but his heart. He had the liveliest sympathy and affection for the natives of India. Thoroughly understanding their traditions and their manners, he treated men and women of all ranks with the consideration and respect due to an ancient society. The time is past when so adventurous and singular a career is possible in India or elsewhere. The world grows more methodical, and routine takes the place of individual effort. But the same qualities of head and heart are still the only guides to success in the government of a people different from ourselves in race, religion, and manners, but united to Great Britain by a common allegiance and common duties.
