The substance of this was a thesis presented by the author to the madras university in 1927 and won a prize for the same. The origin and significance of phallic worship, in which the chapters discuss a) the Nagas b) the evolution of the Naga cult and c) the meaning of the linga and a re-inquiry into its origin; part 2) is on the Buddhist and Jaina remains in Tamil Nadu; part 3) describes Tamil temples and part 4) charts the growth of sectarianism and some important dates. The book is the product of extensive study and research of Saivism and Its History. The subject of the book is very illuminate and delicate. There is no statement in the book to which exception may justly be taken. It is also an indispensable one in the context of Saivism. This book is a reprint of the 1929 edition.
