The limited portion of information recently obtained in this country as to the existence and practices of the classes of Assassins known by the name of Thugs, has had the effect of directing public curiosity to the subject; and the following pages have been compiled with a view to the gratification of that feeling. The best authorities have been consulted; and the general views which are presented to the reader may claim at least the praise of accuracy. As the object of the writer was to convey information, and to afford as just, and, at the same time, as vivid a picture as possible of the strange state of society which it was his duty to exhibit, the author has in many instances given the confessions or depositions of members of the Thug fraternity in their own language, in preference to rendering them into his own. A well detailed book that gives the modus operandi and thoughts of the Thugs. The Thugs were a band of highway assassins who were spread all over India. They were usually disguised as pilgrims and used to win the confidence of other travelers saying that the highway was dangerous. Their main weapon was a yellow scarf with which they used to strangle the unsuspecting travelers. The Thugs were secret societies who were in contact with other Thug gangs. They had their own language called Ramaseena and carried out their enterprise after elaborate ceremonies dedicated to the goddess Bhavani, who they though had given her protection and blessing to their operations. This book offers exhaustive notes on their operations and also the depositions of captured Thugs. The Thugs were detected and crushed by Maj. Gen. Sleeman, who was the Superintendent of the Commission for suppression of the Thuggees.
