The book first published in 1899. At that time Santali language had no script of its own, it was using Devnagari, Bengali, Roman, Oriya but it was a turning point of this language that it got its own script “OL Chiki” in 1925., , Millions of people, mainly found in West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh, speak the Santali., , Santali belongs to the Munda, or Kolarian family of languages, spoken with little variation in pronunciation, or idiom over the greater part of the above-mentioned area. The Dictionary deduces the meanings of the different forms of noun, adjective, verb, adverb & c., , The Examples show the common use of the words selected with great care. A few illustrate the use of words in proverbs, maxims (& c) as affording some insight into the mental characteristics of the Santals., , Santali has been effected more or less by all the languages it has come into contact, and possesses a remarkable power of naturalising word of foreign origin. The order of the letters in the English Alphabet has been adhered to in this Dictionary. This work contains a complete list of the words used in Santali.
