This book contains scarcely a sentence which may not be of use to the learner. All the words in it will be found in the dictionaries. It will be a useful exercise for the student occasionally to re-write the pieces, using synonyms; to make précis of them; and, in some cases, to construct cross-examinations as on pp. 77-79. This book is intended for intermediate and advanced students of Tamil. As far as contradictory features allow, the passages are graded in ascending order of difficulty, and some of the earlier ones could be embarked on towards the end of a second year of study. An attempt has been made to introduce the student through these pages to a wide range of style and subject matter. The only noticeable gaps are the language of technical publication. It has not been the intention of the compilers to provide an ethnology of only the very best of modern Tamil prose. It is not needless to remark that all references to the handbook should be carefully looked up.
