Mmhonlumo Kikon’s third collection is rightly titled “Slingstones”, because the poems are not just lyrical and melodious, they are also tinged with sadness and dejection, understandable for anyone exposed to the turbulent legacy of the North-East. A neat turn of phrase, a fleeting image, a felicity with the language, make for a poet who is grounded in the disturbed history of the North-East, especially Nagaland and its immediate neighbourhood, but whose readership is bound to transcend the region. At the end, the verdant fields take over from the killing fields.
