This novel, set in the nineteenth century, tells the story of two feuding families over a period of three generations ³ the Ghosals and the Chatterjees. Madhusudan Ghosal, whose family has lost its social standing, becomes wealthy, buys up the Chatterjees` debts, and sends a proposal for the hand of their daughter Kumudini. The marriage tie, and Kumudini herself, become Madhusudan`s instruments to impress and insult the Chatterjees. A rising Bengali bourgeoisie is contrasted with a decaying aristocracy, with a focus on the frustrations of domesticity.ISBN - 9780195686784
