Illustrated Testimony of a Reticent Air Warrior
If ever there was an aircraft that evoked fear and respect in the history of military aviation it was undoubtedly the MiG-21. Even in India, the platform was used as a deterrent since 1963 and forced our adversaries to constantly search for a viable solution. While the test of time saw to it that all its contemporary rivals were soon sent to the museums, our MiG-21 fleet continued to fly, fire and fight.
In India we pushed this aeroplane beyond its intended operational envelope and IAF must take full credit for making this MiG famous in the world. The aeroplane has since been praised, awed at and sometimes criticized for reasons beyond its design limits. But like a true Air Warrior, MiG-21 ‘soldiers on’ even through the 21st century.
True Soldiers do not speak and oldest MiG-21, the Type-77 will shortly complete its service ‘silently’. Therefore this is an attempt to pay a photographic tribute to a true ‘soldier aeroplane’ and portray a ‘Correct Picture’… literally.
While there are countless ‘ Unsung Heroes’ who helped make this flying machine into a legend it is today this compilation attempts to portray all facets of the machine in its raw beauty. Through these six chapters this aeroplane’s aspects and angles, perspectives of pilots and impressions of technicians will help the readers to relive the ‘MiG’s Era’, well beyond its service life.
