Cuckold, published in 1997, is a book about a Rajput prince, Maharaj Kumar, who is the husband of Mira Bai, Lord Krishna’s devotee. The story is set in the 16th century and focuses on Maharaj Kumar who is the son of the King, thus making him the crown prince of Mewar.
The Prince calls himself Cuckold as he is married to a woman who is in love with the Hindu God-Krishna and beliefs that she is married to him. Maharaj Kumar longs for her love and finds himself frustrated at her divine devotion to the Lord. This fictional tale then spins into a web of politics, with destructive battles within the Kingdom to decide who would become the heir of the throne after the King’s death, though the Rajput Kingdom is at the height of its power. The Prince realizes that he needs to fight for what is rightfully his and strategically plans out his actions.
Cuckold is a book that weaves politics, history, epics and mysticism. The author also shows the Rajput community’s system of honour, sacrifice and valour. Through the eyes of the Prince, the book raises questions about traditions, conduct and beliefs like the preference of death over dishonour. Readers will be taken on a journey to the times with the Rajputs were were at their best.
