Andhras played a remarkable role in the development of Buddhism and its geographical expansion. This study attempts to give a comprehensive account of the emergence and growth of the Mahayana in Andhradesa. It makes extensive use of original literary sources as well as archaeological evidences to show that Andhradesa is the original home of Mahayana, Buddhism.
Short biographical sketches of the well-known Mahayana philosophers and logicians from Andhra such as Acarya Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, Buddhapalita, Bhavaviveka, Dijnana and Dharmakirti have been out lined. The impact of Mahayana Buddhism on Andhra culture and society is also examined. It traces the history of the early Andhaka school including its component sects, which were foundational and paved the way for the emergence and development of Mahayana Buddhism subsequently.
