The book entitled Production and Properties of Cast Al-Si Alloys presents a structured matter on fundamentals associated with production of primary aluminium and aluminium-silicon alloy casting besides basic principles, methods and techniques used for controlling the mechanical and metallurgical properties of Al-Si alloys. First chapter is an introduction which highlights the classification of aluminium alloys, aluminium production methods, important commercial Al-Si alloys and their applications. Second chapter describes the fundamentals of material science, plastic deformation mechanisms and the metal strengthening mechanisms namely strain hardening, grain refinement, solid solution strengthening, precipitation and dispersion hardening. Third chapter is based on fundamentals of casting and methodologies for controlling castings defects. Fourth chapter describes the physical metallurgy of Al-Si alloys in respect of phase diagram and common micro-constituents present in these alloys and their effect on properties of castings. Fifth chapter presents methodologies for enhancing quality and soundness of castings namely fluxing, degassing, filtering, grain refinement, modification and heat treatment. This chapter also describes the basic principles of heat treatment of Al-Si alloy casting besides the role and need for selecting of optimum parameters for heat treatment. Sixth chapter highlights the mechanism of grain refining of cast Al-Si alloys, common grain refiners, factors affecting grain refinement, poisoning, fading of grain refinement and control of fading. Seventh chapter presents the mechanism of modification of cast Al-Si alloys, common modifiers, factors affecting modification, fading of modification effect and their control. ISBN - 9788122434514
